"Batteries dying after 5 years of hard use" 2010-01-31

My second set of batteries are showing signs that the end is near. I purchased this replacement set over 5 years ago, the first set died after 4 years of hard use in construction. Most of the use is on the 18v Hammer-drill. I've run this drill hard and now expect 4-6 years from a set of batteries. So, the choice is another set of 2 batteries at $75 each or move on up to a new Milwaukee, hmmm ... I will try the 9 volt battery trick to try and save these batteries.

Update: I decided to try an salvage the batteries and started by running the batteries dead on the flashlight, it was part of the combo package, overnight. Used a 9 volt battery as has been recommended for 30 seconds then charged the battery the next morning and was surprised when the drill was once again going at full speed. As the batteries were dying, the drill no longer operates at full speed and then it won't even turn on, but the flashlight continued to work for 3-4 hours.

So, I don't have to buy new batteries. I'll update if they crash. From my experience, it seems that battery life is extended if they are used often.

The 9-volt battery jump-start worked on my Milwaukee NiCad battery like a champion. This little trick saved me the expense of a new battery and it is wonderful. I had two batteries that came with the original purchase and have purchased two more since I have owned the Drill Driver. I am a thrifty type Yankee so I never throw any thing away until I am convinced that all hope is gone. So now, thanks to DB I'll have 4! Functional batteries! Almost better than Christmas, its tax free and legal to boot.

Actually, I was planning to make a drawing and submit it to Digi-Key to have some cells configured for the battery casings as replacements but now I can procrastinate a little longer. Has anyone gone to the trouble to do this him or herself? I see some web sites that do exchanges but was put off by the shipping expense.

I'm not an EE so I'm wondering why not just go all the way and do it with lithium-Ion cells using the same charger. Any comments on that

The 18v NiCad was the worst of all. After it stopped getting charged, opened it, the cells had leaked and the terminals rusted. No hope of bringing it back. I am in the market for a new 18v cordless but no brand has impressed me yet. The three drills(two 14.4v and one 18v- almost new as the two batteries died in about one year after I purchased them) have been great but no batteries, the worst in the world. Bye Bye Milwaukee!!

Good variety of blades to test out the capabilities of your Hackzall. Oddly, these blades seem to last longer than standard recip saw blades. Or maybe I'm just not using the Hackzall in as intense situations as I would a standard reciprocating saw. Still, I sliced up a one-piece fiberglass tub w/ surround into quite a few pieces and cut out the surrounding drywall with one PVC blade. Blade still looks great.

have used these DeWalt chucks quite a bit in my line of work as a union tinner. had our tool crib send one out and it lasted two days before it crapped out on me. sent it back for a replacement and the same thing happened to the replacement, turns out one of the three jaws would get jammed and not align with the others when tightening. even when it was working, i found it to be a PITA to get a bit in and out of it. a coworker of mine has a unibit permanently locked in his, unable to get the bit out, he now has to deal with dead weight of a locked DeWalt chuck on his expensive unibit. for all the aggravation i'd much rather deal with a keyed chuck, or if you've got the coin, spring for the Hitachi chuck.

I bought this combo because I needed a good cordless hammer drill. I don't really need another impact driver, but at the price I paid it's a nice bonus. My first project involved drilling about 80 holes in a brick wall for tapcon screws. This drill was easily up to the task. It has good balance, a well designed hand grip that feels good in my hand and plenty of power to get the job done. I also like the way the controls are set up. For instance, you can change from driving screws to hammer drill mode without having to change the clutch setting. I compared the Milwaukee to the Makita and the new Bosch and for me the Milwaukee seemed to be the best designed and built.

I am a door installation carpenter and I bought this little sander to replace the cheapie palm sander I normally use. I do not really require a quality tool for the type of sanding I do on door edges, but the price of this unit was fair and the sander looked quite nice.

I did have my doubts about the palm sander upon reading the bad reviews it received concerning the amount of trouble people seemed to have in loading the paper into the unit. I also found it a bit hard on my first attempt but learned quickly how to do it with little effort. My hands are big so that helps too. One tip I might give is to use a bit of Duct Tape on one edge of the quarter square of Sandpaper to make the paper longer. This will aid in loading the paper because of the added length. It will also make the clamped edge stronger and will not tear as quickly.

I love the LONG cord on this unit. That is a real deal maker right there. It seems to be at least 10' long or maybe longer.

I was able to put sander thru its paces on a home repair painting job on my hallway and I was impressed with the dust collection system and the overall performance of the sander.

The unit comes with a Carrying case . Personally I don't care for plastic cases that come with tools and have a stack of them in my garage from assorted tools I have bought over the years. They just sit in there empty. I should toss them but you know how that goes. I imagine many people appreciate the plastic tool cases and if you are one of these types then you will love this bright red case.

The sander seems to be on the quiet side compared to my old sander and the vibration you feel in your hand during use is not to bad.

The on and off switch is recessed into the unit and a bit on the small side. I imagine if you are using gloves you may find it hard to switch the unit on and off.

This unit has a unbelievably good warranty also. FIVE YEARS!

Now that is a warranty!

Overall I give this TOOL 5 STARS.

"Great Tool No Problems" 2009-12-12

I recently purchased this sander because of the price and I wanted a back-up sander. Personally I also own a Porter Cable 330 Speed Block and a Makita 4552K. The Speed Block is a wonderful sander and has many hours of use with no problems. It has a couple of drawbacks no dust collection, very hard to depress the lever to change paper and no rubber grip. The Makita is okay a little easier to change the paper, no rubber grip, an interior stiffner for the bag tends to break easliy. Now for the Milwaukee, powerful, long rubber covered cord, creates a very fine swirl free finish, is well weighted and balanced, great dust bag, rubber protected switch and a good but not great paper holding system. I too was dissapointed at first to find that the rear lever for mounting the paper seemed to get in the way of the dust collection port, but come on people move the lever just a little more past the dust chute and guess what no interference what so ever. Some have complained that the sander is hard to hold and wants to walk across the material. Again common sense should come into play here, this is an aggresive sander move up a grit or 2 and you will have a much easier time and a better end product, after all this is a finishing sander not meant for removing large amounts of material at a time. All in all this is a great sander for the money. For the price and the features I would highly recommend this product to anyone.

I got this last year for $29.99, shipped. I had not used it for a year till this fall when I had a lot of projects to take care of around the house. I have to admit I did not read the instructions till you guys mentioned it, and never used the punch. However I will next time! The clamping lever at the rear is a bit inconvenient but I just swing it past the vacuum and it works well so long as you attach the rear part of the sandpaper first. Then do the front. Yes, it grasps firmly and the spring of the clamp is a bit hard to push but I have never had a problem with the paper slipping. I am leaving the clamp plastic on since that's the way it is supposed to be. The sander is powerful and cuts the wood quickly and evenly so long as you do your part. In fact I find I have to be careful not to take off too much. 4 stars only because the clamps are a bit hard to use. I will try the self adherent paper, perhaps that would add a half star. Other than that, the quality is great and results great, and a 5 year warrantee is hard to beat.

To those people that said it is too hard to change the paper. What sander did you buy? All it takes is a little brainpower to make it easy. I haven't used it enough yet, but it performed well when I did use it. I wondered how I was going to make holes in the paper to allow the vac to work, but I found that they include a hole puncher with the sander. I would recommend this sander to anyone looking to purchase one.

I'm a dairy farmer so they are not kept in the best working cond. and they are holding up great. the construction of the tools is awesome they are definitely heavy duty. the work light i was very disappointed in though.the button to turn it on is so small and hard to push you can barely turn it on/off with gloves. other than that the light is also nice.

I have been looking to upgrade my tools for a while and was really looking at a Makita LT601 kit but couldn't find a happy price to make me feel good about something I did not need. (but I did here-later) I have also had Milwaukii equipment too. I looked at the Milwaukii kit at the local store and thought the kit a little to heavy duty for usual home work even though I am rough on my tools. I upgraded from a Dewault 14V drill even though it was fine I was never quite happy with it or its Nicad batteries.

Millwaukii offers two kits, this one and the same kit except the drill and lighter duty batteries. This kit is heavy duty and the hammer drill is massive. I have always used my drills as screw drivers and with a socket adapter as a power wrench. I will use the impact driver for as the screw driver and nuts and bolts and will just use the drill as a drill. The saw again is beefier than the Makita but handles as well. The recip saw seems good but I have not been able to use it yet. I think it will be great up the tree when I do the fruit tree trimming! The flash light seems flimsy and the switch is flush to the surface and hard to feel and activate but it sits and adjusts well. I'll be using the bag for the Gym.

I only got to use the kit on the last third of a project but feel really good about it. The triggers have good control but the lights are really gimicks in my mind. They shine from above the trigger so your always working in a shadow. I can see getting real friendly with the impact driver and see all the construction workers working around our new building using them.

The only thing I have to complain about is the fact the drill and driver do not have trigger guards. Of course neither do any other manufacturers. In situations where I need two hands and have put the drill in the crook of my elbow or my pocket and had the drill activate and get tangled in my cloths. I can see this happening in a tool bag/box too. This kind of strikes me as a safety issue.

Actually I feel real guilty getting this kit. #1 I did not really need it and #2 someone at Amazon really screwed up! When I bought it they had the price listed at $412! (happy price) And I did the Amazon premium trial for free shipping. A few days later I looked at the web site for grins and saw the price jumped to $535 and now I see it's $579.99 in less than a month! Hoo Boy! On top of that I canceled the premium trial. And It also came with a limited time mail in coupon for a third battery.

Bottom line; If I had not got this kit at a steal I would still be wanting a good cordless Lithium combo kit. It is a better kit than the kit I was looking at and not not that more expensive then the other kit normally. This is the kit I really wanted even though I didn't know it. Sometimes the Gods do smile on me.

"excellent hammer and drill" 2009-08-08

The new M18 2611-20 model has some advances over prior models in all but one regard, the side handle. The new side handle design makes for a slightly more compact unit but it cannot the adjusted 360 degrees the way you could with the older V18 hammer drills. This was definitely a step backwards.

The battery life is excellent but you have to charge them until the green light on the charger lights up. There are 4 red battery charge status bars on the battery pack but when all 4 are lit up the pack is not really fully charged - a mistake I made the first time I used the drill and as a result the charge life was not very good. This is the first charge I have seen there the plug at the end is designed to still provide another plug in spot for another tool so one can plug in the charger and another device on the end of a extension cord or into a wall outlet. IBM was using this plug end 30 years ago and it was nice to see it implemented by Milwaukee's product people.

The clutch mechanism on the chuck takes some getting used to and if you try to hand tighten the chuck by applying power to the drill it will not tighten fully. The drill is designed to protect the user so it has a neutral or lock position on the trigger switch and then you can tighten the chuck which slips a bit and you can hear the clutch ratcheting (at least that is the impression as to what is happening under the covers). This lock position is required for changing from hammer to drill to screw mode with the drill.

The case is a sturdy one which I always find with Milwaukee products and wish Dewalt would follow suit instead of often making its customers spend another $40 to buy one of the cheaply built DeWalt cases. A flaw of the Milwaukee case is that the designer was being a bit too cute in making everything fit snug in its own recess and so there is no space left over for screw or drill bits or any other accessories. This is where Bosch excels with its cases for its drills and its hole saws.

This drill has a integral LED light that goes on automatically when the trigger is depressed. Until you have used a drill with this feature it is hard to appreciate how nice it is to have and and how many places it makes it easier to spot a drill location or find the head of a screw. I now buy only cordless drills with the built in LED lights, which are also found on the Bosch and Makita drills but seem to be absent with the Hitachi and DeWalt drills - even the high end lithium-ion powered models.

One place where Milwaukee follows in the misguided footsteps of Makita is in showing their drills with belt clip and bit holders and then leaving them out of their $700 retail kits. You have to contact their service department and order a belt clip, 2 screws, a washer, and the bit holder as separate part numbers and they have a $25 minimum order or a separate order processing charge in addition to the charges for shipping and handling. So the customer shells out $25 in order to save Milwaukee $0.50 in part costs for its kits. Makita does the same thing with its lithium-ion drill kits and it is a sad day when the bean counters prevail over the product managers at a company. It would be nice if Makita and Milwaukee at least provided a kit one could buy at the same store as the drill that had theses parts and charged people $5-6 and minimized the aggravation.

The hammer action works very well and appears to be a good contender with the excellent Bosch hammer drills. One thing that is missing is a depth stop which was also available on Bosch and Makita hammer drills. It is a real time saver to be able to drill to a specific depth and know it at a glance. This is another area there the new design introduced some new flaws with the tool. The best design in this regard is the one used by Bosch for its hammer drills where the depth stop is integrated into the handle so its position can rotate along with the side handle. The depth stop and the side handle is often shown in pictures of Makita hammer drills but neither are included with the drills and need to be ordered and purchased later.

The chuck on this hammer action model holds well for hammering but will loosen when using large 7/16" drill shafts with the hammer action or even with it turned off. It may be the new clutch design as I have not experienced this with other hammer drills in the past.

The drill has more torque than any other 18v cordless I have used, which includes Hitachi, DeWalt, Makita, and Bosch models. It runs relatively cool unlike the V18 models it replaces. There is a thermal and load cutoff mechanism and it can cutout when there is a heavy load even if the drill is not running hot. This is something that the Makita incorporates in some of its drills they have a switch setting for high torque work that I suspect raises the amp load threshold setting for the internal cutoff electronics. This is something that Milwaukee needs to add to the design of their drills as well.

"Battery compatibility was my only issue" 2009-06-14

This drill was bought to replace a nine year old 18 volt hammer drill that fell and broke. This one has good balance, nice speed control, and the reversible battery design comes in handy more than I expected. In addition, the belt clip is brilliant. No special belts nor holsters are needed. The clip itself fastens securely over a regular belt, the tool locks into the clip effortlessly, and releases easily.

My only issue comes with the NiCad versus Lithium Ion battery. After a trip to Home Depot, I had come to the conclusion that all of the Lithium Ion tools were of the compact battery design and incompatible with NiCad batteries. After I received this drill, I discovered that Milwaukee makes "Lithium-Ion" tools that are backwards compatible with the 5 NiCads I already have. Had I known that beforehand, I would have purchased a brand new model 0824-20 for $15 more.

I was disappointed as soon as I saw the cheap plastic drill chuck and the 1.7 amp hour Ni-Cad batteries. When I read the description they didn't say or it wasn't clear what amp hour the battery was. The drill feels light and cheaply made for a Milwaukee. I own two Milwaukee 14.4 Power plus drills with 2.4 ah batteries and metal chucks and you can tell the difference in quality all the way around and are worth the extra $40 or $50 dollars. The drills are very close to the same size. Power and performance is good for what it is. I don't think it will last as long as my other Milwaukee drills.

Just got today from [...] Very well balanced. A little noisy in drill/hammer and hammer only mode but very smooth and quiet on drill only. Impressed that Milwaukee made the gear housing out of magnesium instaed of the usual plastic. Rotary is made in Germany. Hallelujah!!!! V18 batteries provide plenty of power(actually 20 volts as lithium ion batteries are made up of 4 volt packs and a V18 has 4 packs while a V28 sports 7). Everything fits well in the blow molded case. I inquired via phone to Milwaukee about this model. They said it was recently discontinued. A shame. I purshased the V18 over the V28 rotary as I have a hammer drill/driver,hatchet,flashlight and vaccuum that can use V18 batteries but not V28s. UPDATE DRILLED A 1/2" 2" deep hole,3 3/8 2" deep holes,10 3/16 1" deep holes and chipped out concrete that was filling a crack but was cracked and needed replaced on one battery. It still had life it was at the 1 light lit up stage. Very powerful comparable to my corded bosch bulldog 11224vsr.

This is an excellent set of drill bits. The case alone is worth as much as the set. The drill bits are very sharp and do an excellent job ripping through metal, wood, and plastic (all I have used them on so far). It comes with pretty much every size you need before getting into boring bits or a hole saw.

I read some reviews about how they keep breaking. If you use them at the proper speed and don't press down too hard then you will rarely break a drill bit. You are supposed to let the drill and bit do the work not your muscles.

Having used several drill bits over the course of my 30-year carpentry career, I consider myself a good judge of which drill bits will do the job and which will fail. Upon first examination, the bits felt sharp but extremely brittle, usually the first sign of inferior metal. Sure enough, while using the 1/8" bit to run a pilot hole in a sheet metal framing stud, the bit snapped. Even though I received these as a free promotional gift, they will only be used as a backup and only in wood. The case is nice but a bit oversized for my professional toolbox, where space is at a premium.

I've had this driver for two months and use it daily. The driver is stronger than I had expected and even drives 3" deck screws in a pinch. It is far easier to carry around than the 18v drill I usually use, fits in a tool belt. This is probably the best general use power tool I've ever bought!

The m-spector is great for searching into spaces looking for cables, insulation, pipes, etc.

I just got this so I haven't really put it through the paces yet, and of course new tools(toys) are always neato-keen!

I did play with it a little to get the feel of it. The camera cable is pretty stiff I know the armor is for the cable protection, but I would think it could be a little softer to be more flexable. There is a plastic lens cover that doesn't seem to be easy to replace. I think this would be an issue with scratches after time?

As far as focuse, you can magnify up to 2x, and there is 3 levels of light brigthness. I found I could read a reciept with the camera about 6" away, about 8" I could tell they were letters and #'s but couldn't read them this is in a closed drawer in a room with the lights out.

I looked in a wall and found it not the easiest to move around in the wall to look around, but could see conduit and pipe clear enough. Maybe I just need to use it more to learn to maipulate the camera to were I want it. I paid about 185 for it, that was almost $50 less than I saw it at HD.

My main complaint is the case that comes with it. You leave the camera on to put it in the case, this seems to make the case bigger than it needs to be. I have an astro so space is a premium. The drill that comes with it doesn't fit in the caes. But for the price I can always find a different way to store it on the truck.

I haven't used the drill it seems good, it's a milwaukee so we know it isn't junk

I bought these Milwaukee tools because we are building a house. And let me tell you tell you one thing about them they are the best set of cordless tool that I have every bought. I love the fact that the batteries last so long. I can use the circular say for about 2-3 hours on one battery. As long as I don't bog down the saw. If I bind the blade and bog down the saw the battery will only last about 30 min to 1 hour. But I'm still impressed with the longevity of the batteries. I can use the drill for way over 3 hours of constant use with just one battery. We put our whole propanel roof on our house (Over 5000 square feet of roof), and I only used about 4 batteries.

It took me a lot of time to decide between the Makita's and the Milwaukee's. But my father in-law has already had to replace the transmission in his Makita and hasn't had to touch his Milwaukee's. And he bought them at the same time. So that pushed me towards the Milwaukee's.

My wife even enjoys using my drill because it is so light weight. And you can even buy the smaller battery and the drill gets even lighter. She doesn't have any problems running any of the tools for the life of the battery. And that definitely a good thing. If the tools are too heavy you don't want to carries them around all day.

I was very impressed with amazon's price. I searched all over the internet and couldn't find any cheaper. So if you are looking for a good 18 volt cordless tool kit this is one of the best for the money in my eyes. But the only suggestion that I could make is if you have the money go a head and upgrade to the 28 volt Milwaukee's. The batteries last much longer and the tools have more power. But the 18 volts are a very good tool.

"Great Drill!" 2009-03-08

I owned a Black & Decker cordless NiCd drill before this one. I used it for about 3 years until the batteries started to fade. Instead of buying new batteries I decided to buy a new drill.

I wanted something less plastic and more manly. Off all the drills I picked up in the store, this one felt the best. The metal chuck is awesome. You can tighten the chuck with just one hand, without spinning the drill.

I also wanted a drill that more consistently met its torque settings. That is, its tightening torque would be predictable and not sloppy like the B&D. This one seems to me to do a much better job of that. I did not test it with any special equipment. Just my impression.

I wanted a drill whose charger told you when the charge was finished. This one does.

I decided on the NiCd because I did not want to pay the extra cost for Lithium or NiMH. One other impression I have is that NiCd works better when its ben left out in the cold all night, than does Lithium. My Lithium drill has to warm up before it starts acting right. This one acts right no matter the temperature. I assumed that was due to the battery.

From this point on, I will do my best to buy Milwaukee tools. I love the feel and performance of this drill.

"Great Product, just one thing..." 2009-11-27

I bought this pair as a starter to create my own full sized set of Milwaukee M18 tools. I couldn't find a set that didn't have either a circular saw or a flashlight, two tools that I didn't have any use for. I bought this set, and then bought "bare" tools and a third battery from a famous auction site to complete my set. Both of these tools have plenty of power and good run time. I like the test button and strength meter on the batteries so you know whether to bring a fresh battery with you if you're doing a small job around the house. The only issue I have (and believe me, it's a minor one and a little silly) is that the batteries slide off the bottom of the tool instead of dropping out like my DeWalt 18 Volt tools. It's just something that I find a little bit annoying while swapping out batteries. On my DeWalt, I can hold the tool in my right hand grab a fresh battery in my left, swap out the batteries and drop the spent one in the charger in one smooth motion. On the Milwaukee, because of the positioning of the battery catches, and the fact that the batteries slide out away from the tool, I have to switch the tool to my left hand, slide out the spent battery, set it down, and then slide the fresh battery into place. You can't even remove a freshly charged battery from the charger with one hand because the sliding action is not that smooth, and the charger is light (as it should be). Like I said it's a little silly, and it didn't keep me from giving this tool 5 stars.

"Hackzall, great investment for light duty work." 2009-11-01

The Hackzall is the compact, light duty little brother of the Sawzall. It has an impressive amount of power for something with only 12V. Its a very durable device that I've dropped a number of times and it still kept on running. I'm a big fan of this tool but if you are looking to prune branches, cut through any wood more than 1.5 inches thick or cut large radius PVC stick with the Sawzall. Its very precise if you need to cut a circle out of a piece of sheet rock. It has a variable speed trigger, a power indicator, an LED light and a comfortable grip. Its about 3 pounds which makes it very easy to handle.

I use this tool mostly to cut down dowels and it does a great job. Where ever you need to work in a tight space or a need another free hand this will do the job. I suggest you buy this IN ADDITION to the Sawzall for the most versatility.

I'm a plumbing contractor and use sawzall's almost every day. I bought the hackzall less than 2 months ago. I liked it at first but then started to notice the battery life was bad, the batteries would not hold a charge. I would charge them one day, try using it two days later and they are both dead. They drain very quickly and they do not hold a charge for very long while using it.

Now.... one of my batteries is blinking in the charger with both red and green meaning the battery is toast, great. Not even two months old.

Now... using the other battery the tool seized up and will not operate and started smoking.

Maybe a good deal for the do it yourselfer but this tool is not for professional contractors, don't even waste your time. It's nothing more than just a toy. I'll stick with my regular cordless Dewalt for now on, I should have known better.

I tried calling Milwaukee but they kept sending me to one of their useless service centers that won't help me. I'm done wasting my time. Throwing it in the garbage and will write it up as a loss.

"Another Milwaukee M12 Winner" 2009-08-31

I purchased the M12 Hackzall to be part of my easy-to-carry toolkit along with a couple other M12 tools. The Hackzall is slightly disappointing in compared to the others in terms of build quality (fit & finish). The quality is passable but not nearly the same perfection as the M12 drill that I have. This fit & finish issue is the only reason for me to take one star off the review.

Several other reviewers have noted that the Hackzall vibrates. It does. Quite a bit compared to bigger Milwaukee Sawzalls. After giving the vibration some thought, I realized that there are probably two solid reasons for this design choice (to not include a counterbalance weight). First, it would add to the size and weight of what is supposed to be a one-hand use saw. Second, counterbalance mechanisms sap power. Given the choice of longer run time or a bit of vibration, it seems that Milwaukee made the right choice. If you want cordless with vibration damping, get one of the M18 Sawzalls.

In the end, the M12 Hackzall is a great tool for it's intended use: one hand cutting in cramped quarters. It also makes a great compact cutting tool for the do-all tool bag that I take to friends and relatives when I'm wearing my handy-man hat.

Incredible -- a fully capable recip saw that is slightly bigger than a cordless screwdriver. I can't tell you how useful it is to be able to fit this blade into tight spots to cut nails etc. And it fits regular Sawzall blades as well as smaller blades of its own. You can get fine toothed blades and it's almost like having a nimble hand held saber saw. Just a fantastic invention -- we find new uses for it on every job.

It lets you be more surgical than a full size recip saw. We recently had to reinstall kitchen cabinets without destroying them and we couldn't have done it without the Hackzall.

***** One important point. If you're buying the Hackzall, you need a second battery because in hard use the battery will run out in maybe 30-45 minutes of hard use. Fortunately the batteries charge in 20 minutes, so if you have a spare, you will never be without power.

The really cool thing is -- instead of buying an extra battery, buy the Hackzall in the kit with the 12 volt Milwaukee driver (which is also a wonderful tool.) You get the two tools and batteries for LESS than the price of the Hackzall with an extra battery.

I purchased a couple of these batteries with a four tool combo kit. While the tools seem to be solid and comfortable, the batteries are bit of a disappointment. Why would Milwaukee downgrade the amperage of their batteries from the V18's 3 amp to the M18's 2.6 amp? When Makita has set the benchmark @ 3 amps, it seems foolish to offer anything less. This wouldn't really bother me that much, after all it is only about 14% less, but Milwaukee went out of their way to obscure this fact. Nowhere on their website does it state the amperage for these and the battery itself only gives it's rating in watts, on the bottom in very small writing, 47 watt hours. Not a good way to treat your base who loved the V18 batteries, only to see that line discontinued. I gave it three stars because I think these batteries will probably live up to their expectations, mostly, but feel like I got tricked into buying something that's not equivalent to Makita's LXT, and that is who they are chasing after, IMHO.

Bought this to replace an ailing no-name suede tool pouch. Initially it was pretty good but I noticed some of the stitching was starting to pull out from where the lower pouch was sewn on to the main bag. This was after only about three steady weeks of use doing framing repair and roofing. Tons of pockets and places to put ALL your tools and nails. Nice rig but doesnt seem very heavy duty. Bummer this didnt work out and I'm glad I didnt toss my old rig...

Well, I exchanged it for another. Arrived very quickly. Went over all the stitching, yanking on stuff to see if it was worthy and it seems like it is. If the stitching fails again at the pockets I will take it to a shoemaker and have the corners rivited. Seems like its a detail that should be there already as the hammer loops are secured that way. Anyways, the rig is nice, has plenty of storage and seems thought through. Itsa keeper.

Watch out for this drill... I purchased most of the new M18 tools with extra batteries etc etc. and this particular drill broke the 2nd time I used it. I had the side handle on it and while using a hole saw it snapped a piece off the drill itself(the piece that holds the side handle on) the cheap pot metal drill casing/body broke right off . Now it cannot be used with a side handle and there is sharp metal on the body of the drill exposed..Not so "Nothing but Heavy duty"! In all my years of using cordless tools on jobs I have never seen anything like this, why they did not use the standard ring type side handle clamp is beyond me. Also the drill cuts out under load like the other reviewer mentioned and the battery life is no more than my Dewalt 18volt Ni-Cads. Back to Makita and Dewalt for me.

I thought initially that this was a good value and with the new M type batteries I could get years of use out of the drill. Milwaukee customers have had to deal with defective NiCad batteries (after 3 years Milwaukee did issue a recall and free replacement), and now anyone with an investment in V type battery packs and chargers will find that they do not work with the new M type drills like this one. The M type lithium-ion batteries are much slower to charge than Makita lithium-ion batteries and I suspect this is due to the Milwaukee charger not having a cooling fan so the charge rate is slowed down to compensate.

The carry case is well built as is usually true with Milwaukee products (and definitely not true with DeWalt cases) and even has a compartment for the side handle. The side handle is a clever design that enable the drill to be a bit shorter but also limits its placement compared to ones that have a ring that goes around the drill and provides a full 360 degrees for the handle position. The case does not provide any place to store drill bits or bit and screw holders as with the Makita and Bosch storage cases.

What really disappointed me was using the drill to bore holes in stucco using the new Blue Boar stucco & wood TCT bits. I have used the Makita which is rated far lower in it available torque but found that worked like a champ with this bit and stucco and brick veneer walls and the OSB sheathing. With this Milwaukee drill though I would be boring a hole and all of a sudden the drill would cut out and then after a few seconds I would have power again and cut for a while and then it would cut out again. I would guess it is some sort of thermal cut-out mechanism to keep the batteries from catching fire or exploding (like the Sony lithium ion laptop batteries) but it is very annoying. After this happened with the second hole I was boring with the stucco bit I switched to the little Makita and had no more problems.

With the Makita lithium-ion or the Hitachi lithium ion cordless drills that I use the drills may discharge faster under a heavy load and need to be recharged after fewer holes but they never cutout like this. It really negates the theoretical power of this drill for tough jobs. I would not even recommend it for driving screws until Milwaukee sorts this out.

"Great for some applications but terrible for others" 2009-09-27

I have had numerous cordless drills including the Milwaukee 18v NiCad powered ones and I was eager to give this lithium-ion powered model a go. I had been using a Makita that was light and powerful for its size but with masonry it just did not have enough power. the M18 is supposed to be the most powerful of its type and uses a new battery technology that unfortunately prevents using one's old V18 battery packs or old NiCad batteries with this drill. This was not a problem with the V18 drills but is with these.

The power is excellent in some circumstances, for example driving deck screws one after another where it excels. When it is used in high torque situations though its internal electronics kill the power causing the drill to start and stop frequently. No doubt an overload protection for the lithium ion battery pack but it is poorly implemented. I was using a Blue Boar TCT stucco bit to cut a 4" hole in a stucco wall and the 5/8" OSB sheathing behind it and the Milwaukee would stall repeatedly. I ended up finishing the hole with a much lighter duty Makita 18v lithium ion drill that was slower going but it did not keep stalling or shutting off like the Milwaukee M18 drill.

I was even having trouble with one of the incredible Blue Boar TCT hole cutters in cutting a 2" hole in 1-1/8" OSB. The drill cut the hole in about 5 seconds but it stopped and restarted 3 times during that 5 seconds. The LED light which is a really nice feature also cuts out when the power to the motor is stopped.

I tried one of the Lenox One Tooth 2-1/8" hole saws with the Milwaukee M18 and it was not something I ever plan to repeat. Between the Lenox hole saw's jerky cutting action and the drill cutting out I never felt like I was in complete control which is not fun when using a power tool

I tried using the drill with a regular bi-metal hole saw on particle board and as one would expect the wood started to burn while the hole saw was cutting through. It took about 40 seconds to cut the hole, or about 12 times as long as with a modern TCT hole cutter - which was no surprise. What was surprising is that after this single hole it took 25 minutes to re-charge the battery on the drill. Part of this is the inefficiency of the hole saw and part of it is due to the charger design.

The Makita 18v lithium-ion drill I have has batteries that recharge in 15 minutes using the Makita charger. With the Milwaukee M18 batteries it takes 30-60 minutes to get them fully charged. The only difference that is obvious is that the Makita charger has a fan to cool the internal transformer so maybe it allows it to operate at a higher charge level without overheating. What is great with the quick re-charging time of the Makita battery packs is that I can use lighter weight ones knowing that I can swap it out for a second that only needs to carry me 15 minutes while the other recharges. So I can use two small Makita battery packs more effectively than the Milwaukee M18 battery packs and have a lighter drill to use.

The side handle is a new design and it really is not an improvement over the old one. The new one does not wrap around the drill but instead clamps across two recessed areas in the drill. This enable the overall drill to be an inch shorter which is good, but it also means that it can only be used at a 90 degree angle from the drill. For a angle grinder having a 90 degree handle angle is standard and not a problem. With a drill where I want to be able to use the second handle not to support the weight of the tool with my other hand, but to control the twisting of the drill, it is much more effective to have the second handle at about a 60 degree offset from the drill. This is important then dealing with materials or large hole cutters where the bit can catch and the drill wants to spin around in the opposite direction with me still holding it. I much prefer the old Milwaukee design which is still used by DeWalt for its cordless drills.

The Milwaukee case is as strong as any made and much nicer than the ones DeWalt provides with its drills. Like the DeWalt cases and those from most other manufacturers there is no space left for anything other than the drill, the charger, and the spare battery. I would like a case to have room for a small twist drill kit and a retracting screw holder and a few extra insert bits.

Milwaukee also repeats the Makita insanity by showing a picture of a belt clip and a bit holder on the side of the drill but not including it with the kit. Instead, as with Makita, one has to special order these two items (along with attachment screws and a special washer for 4 special order items in total) and with shipping and handling pay more than $20 which is simply outrageous for parts that would add less than $0.50 to the cost to produce the kit and I would rather pay $5.00 extra at the store than $20 later to special order these parts.

The charger uses an intuitive light scheme. When charging a battery pack there is a red light and when it is finished a green light goes on. This is good except that it appears that you cannot top the batteries as when they are only slightly discharged from a small job the light still appears green. In actuality it is a good idea (per the manual) to leave it for up to 6 hours where it will balance the charge state of the individual cells in the pack (helps to read the instructions).

One nice touch by the Milwaukee engineer (that survived the bean counters) was the plug which has a slot for a second cord to be plugged in so you can use one outlet for two devices - just like the old IBM computer power cords. Often at job sites workers are competing for the available outlets or using a single extension cord to drive a corded drill or sawzall or circular saw and being able to always plug in the charger without using a needed outlet is very handy and something other manufacturers should copy. It is like the Rigid angle grinders that have a LED light on the power cord so you can easily verify that everything is plugged in and working. A five-cent solution that works and yet these are the kinds of things that one wishes other manufacturers' engineers and product designers would see and think we should do this as well - but they seldom do.

This is true with regard to the LED lights that go on with the M18 when the trigger is depressed. Very handy for finding a screw head in less than ideal light, as in an attic or crawl space or even in the corner where the work area is in your shadow. I have even used it in a pinch to light bubble level which in the past would have meant having to use a small flashlight. Once you have used a drill with this feature it will become a "must have" item. The Milwaukee M18 has twin LED lights which may seem like no big deal but they do throw more light and it is another refinement over the standard single LED light provided with the DeWalt drills for example.

Overall a great tool with a serious defect, the protection circuitry for the power pack. This is a powerful drill that is often crippled by its own overly conservative engineering in this area. I have Makita and Hitachi cordless drills that use lithium-ion battery packs and do not have this shortcoming so it is not inherent to the use of lithium-ion, just short sighted engineers who took an overly simplistic approach with the M18. The older V18 drills may not have this defect but Milwaukee is transition to the M18 batteries so availability of replacement V18 batteries may be a problem in the future. For light to medium duty use the Makita's provide a better combination of features and performance.

For heavy duty use the new DeWalt XRP 18v lithium-ion cordless driver drill does not have the power cut-out problems of the Milwaukee M18, has the traditional wrap around second handle for infinite positioning, a LED light, and a much improved carry case (over those it provides for its other tools when it even provides a carry case at all). The DeWalt XRP does not have as nice a balance in the hand as the Milwaukee M18 and according to its specs it is not nearly as powerful, but in actual use it works better and delivers more of its torque to the drill or hole cutter being used.

We bought my father-in-law one of these drills a few years ago and I've been borrowing it from him regularly. Based on quite a bit of use of that one, I liked it enough to come back and buy the exact same thing for myself--that should tell you how happy I've been with it! It has lots of power, the batteries charge quickly and last very well, and the hammer drill has worked just great for a number of projects I've done boring into brick and concrete. If you're not dying to spend an extra hundred bucks for the newest Lithium ion batteries then this model will probably be a good fit for you too.

The build quality is still excellent, although I notice now that the drill and the charger are built in China, so I'm a bit worried about that, I haven't had the best luck with the quality that seems to be coming from there so far, but they are getting better. It still comes with a 5 year warranty so I've got my fingers crossed that getting a unit that's not made in the USA won't come back to bite me.

The batteries are built in Japan, so I have good confidence in them. If you run into the problem of your battery not taking a charge, you should try the 9 volt battery trick, which worked great for me once before on my father-in-law's unit. If the battery gets discharged completely then apparently the charger doesn't sense any charge and won't begin to recharge it. By simply holding a 9 volt battery against the terminals of the drill battery (be careful to get the polarity right--the single lead is positive on the Milwaukee battery) for about 30 seconds you can impart just enough charge so that the charger will pick it up and recharge it fully again. Certainly try this before spending all the money to buy a replacement you might not need.

I've loved this drill even before I bought my own--5 stars!

Please be aware that the batteries that come with this product have a horrible reputation. They often fail within the first year of use. Replacing them is very expensive. I have called Old Milwaukee and they will not make good on this problem. The best course of action would be to avoid Old Milwaukee 18 volt products until they remedy the problem. I really don't want to write and be sour grapes, but this is not an isolated case. Do your research. Look at the comments from people buying their replacement batteries. It's not good new. On the up side, if you are willing to frequently buy replacement batteries, then what you've got here is an very well made drill.

So its a good excuse to get a new tool.(while Im waiting for the brushes)

I purchased this Milwaukee 12 volt combo drill/impact set after checking out other brands of the same style, including Snapon.

Milwaukee beat them all on torque, including the much touted Makita. The rpm is very fast for the impact, as is the drill, although a bit slower.

Great product. I don't know how I lived with out the impact before. I used it side by side with my Makita 18v driver. It was slower and battery ran out of juice quicker, but it worked well driving in 3" lags as well as setting up kitchen cabinets. Wished the led lights had a time delay after using letting go of the trigger like makita's do. The impact will definitely be the most used tool in this kit. The light's magnet didn't have as solid of a grip as I'd like.

This is a good little kit, but it's just that ... little. This is meant for average around-the-house tasks. And for that, it's great. Maybe the Milwaukee name has people thinking it should be some sort of "wonder tool", but it's not.

What it does offer is a few compact, lightweight tools for a good variety of tasks. It lets you get a lot of things done without lugging around big heavy tools. When I need something bigger, I get out the hefty Milwaukee V18 tools I have (now discontinued and replaced by the M18).

Bottom line ... if you use these as intended, they are great. High quality with good ergonomics, impressive battery life and easy to use in tight spaces or where you are working overhead without exhausting your arms.

I recently purchased the Milwaukee M18 Hammer/Drill/Driver mainly because of the Brand integrity but also because I was tired of carrying many extra batteries that ran out of juice too soon. This one surprised me, completely. I'm more of a weekend project warrior and this one completed many tasks that I normally would use my old Black & Decker in combination with an electric drill. I actually used this drill for 3 days before I broke out the second battery for the first time. And the available power and torque is amazing, far surpassing the capabilities of even my electric drill. One should note that two hands should be used when you know it will be a tough job because the torque of this lightweight monster could put a serious hurt on your wrist. Now I'm looking to replace ALL my cordless tools with the M18 Family. The M18 6.5 inch circular saw is next on my list. Yeah, they cost more than most of your average tools, but the benefits far outweigh and are totally worth it.

This flashlight is a great addition to my toolbox. At the campground I can set it down and it stands up and stays adjusted to where I set it. The same under the car, the RV, in a closet or in the basement or attic.

I always keep two batteries charged so I have one for the tool (drill or sawzall) and one to light up the project. The only drawbacks are the size and awkward shape but those are minor. If you have V28 tools, add the work light!

It's a reasonably good replacement for a regular drag light, you can put it upright or on it's back and pivot the head to aim it where you want. Pretty bright but despite what others are saying it doesn't have an adjustable beam, it just gets dimmer as you unscrew the bezel and the bulb goes behind the reflector. It does throw off significant heat so you have to keep the head vents clear and there's no bail or hook on top to hang it for ladder work but I guess Milwaukee wanted to keep it cheap and avoid having it dropped from up high. And it has a spare bulb in the head that nobody seems aware of, including the salesperson.

I had other Milwaulkee tools and have come to learn that thy are nothing short of the best. I bought the 28 volt kit from Amazon which came with the flashlight. I'm a home inspector and thought I would use it on the job. The light is on steady for almost three hours and it still has half the charge left. The light is powerful and easy to handle. The weight is well distributed and having the swivel head enabling the light to be set down and pointing the beam where you need it is great. The 28 volt set including the flashlight is the best designed and built there is.

My first disappointing experience with these was drilling a door jamb to relocate a striker plate. Needs a little precision, right? Not with these bits, which walk like a dog right out of a punch mark. Second job, pre-drilling nail holes in oak trim, on the bench in my workshop. Simple job, right? Not for these bits, broke one in two pieces with surprisingly little effort. Of course, the other bit in the same size finished without any problems. Both of these things tell me there's a quality control issue. Be warned! It's like putting cheap tires on a Porsche, these bits are the most vital but weakest link.

I didn't expect much with bits at this price, but realized yesterday trying to put a pilot pole in a simple piece of hardwood that these are some of the dullest bits I've encountered in many years of bargain-bin hardware shopping. Shocking to have the Milwaukee name on it... if their Sawzall was of this quality a lot of remodel projects would never get done.

On the plus side, the case is solid and easy to open/close and the bits are easy to get in and out. Two stars just for that. I'm going to swap out some of my drill bits from better kits and I think I will be happy.

I think these drill bits are really worth the price. Nice case also, dropped it several times and haven't had any problems with it opening or with bits coming loose. I have drilled several holes in 1/8 inch steel with the 5/16 bit and it is still running strong unlike a different set of drill bits I paid the same price for. the v28 kit is as good as it get's, and this sawsall proves it. I had the rest of the set and figured why not the sawsall to. after I received it I took it home and grabbed a battery that was charged the day before. I set up a 2x6 and guessed that if the battery would last long enough for 10 cut's i'd be happy. BUT, after cutting off 20 1" thick slices of this 2x6 I was tired of cutting. it's light, not bulky, the battery weight is hardly noticed and feels like a real solid tool. I recommend this tool 100%.

This saw doesn't have as much power as the big corded saw that I have, but I didn't expect it to. That would be unreasonable as it is physically just so much smaller. Because it is so much smaller, it will fit where the big saw won't; so, I can still cut stuff I simply can't with the big corded saw. Also, I don't have a generator and can't afford one big enough to run the 15 amp tools I own. This little rascal can go anywhere, like to a demolition site or a future deer stand. It is well worth the money. I can't comment on the battery life as a battery like this has to be charged and discharged several times to get up to snuff and mine just hasn't gone through enough cycles to tell you how long it will last.

I love Milwaukee V28 tools. I own most of the line. See my review of the combo pack.

Ironically, the most disappointing tool of the bunch is the Sawsall. It cuts OK, and the battery life is very good, but with a lot of vibration. The thing buzzes violently even if you run it without a blade.

I've not owned any Milwaukee Sawsalls before. My corded recip saw is a Porter Cable Tiger saw, and it is much more comfortable to use, with way less vibration, and it has an orbital function as well. It also seems to have much more power than this V28 tool (the only v28 tool I notice is down on power compared to corded). Perhaps I'm just spoiled.

Anyway, I love the blade chuck of the V28 sawsall - quick blade changes are easy.

So I'll give it 3 stars, because it does work, but it's not up to par with the rest of the V28 line.

"One month of excellence" 2009-05-28

As indicated I have only had this drill for one month, it being purchased as a replacement for an older ryobi cordless. In this month it has been put through the ringer (mostly sinking long screws, little drilling to date) about three days a week and done very well. Plenty of power and battery life - you can use the two batteries at full tilt all day without any lag between alternating charge times. The chuck is impressively engineered, and I have not had a single bit slip on me in this time. Also the cushioning is a nice touch. I scoffed at it out of the box, but when I dropped it, there was a 'thud' but no 'whack' which was nice.

Make sure you don't want a hammer drill feature if you are purchasing this product.

My only warning thus far has to do with the weight. If you are going to be using it for long stretches in the vertical register, know that the extra pounds add up. It has not been too much for me yet, but I am aware of the weight, whereas it never even registered with the ryobi. I could see the weight making this wonderful tool a bad experience for some.

After 40 years of using power tools, I can say this is the best drill I've ever used. Even the heavy all-metal drills of the old days weren't the equal of this baby... "Excellent drill but overload protection a real problem" 2009-11-15

Overall the M18 is a great drill with an excellent clutch (that does not slip even with small twist drills the way the Hitachi does), good clutch mechanism, 2 speed gear box that is smooth to change, a bright dual LED light setup, and a sturdy case. It does not come with a bit holder or belt clip but you can special order the 4 parts needed and pay an extra $20 for what would have cost Milwaukee 50 cents to add to the kit - don't you love it when the bean counters are in charge.

The Milwaukee has a new design for the side handle that attaches the way the one for the Ridgid drill does at a 90 degree angle to the handle on either side. I prefer the old style which like those on the Makita and DeWalt drills can be anywhere in a 360 degree circle. With some tough drilling situations I like to have the "side" handle straight up just like a heavy duty core drill so I get more effective control over the drill twisting when the bit catches. With the Milwaukee I can't do this and so half the benefit is gone - can still use the handle but is it less effective than with the old design. The engineers probably wanted to make the drill shorter by an inch but this is not a good trade off in my opinion. Where I need short I will use a right angle drill which with its longer main handle works better in controlling any twisting of the drill anyway.

A couple of important caveats to consider before investing in this drill. It uses lithium-ion batteries which are known to overheat and catch fire so the engineers at Milwaukee decided to be very conservative and whenever the power draw exceeds a set level, power is cut to the motor and the LED lights go off. It is an instantaneous cutting off of the power so when using a large hole cutter there is a frequent start and stop and restart and restop while boring a hole which is not at all good. We use lithium-ion powered 18 volt drills from Hitachi, Makita, and DeWalt as well as the Milwaukee M18's and it is only with the Milwaukee drills that we have this problem at anywhere near this level. The only way to get around this is to start off at partial power and slowly add power, being careful not to run the drill at a full torque load.

The manufacturer's specs don't take this overload protection into account and you really cannot use the full power from the drill in situation where there is a high torque load at any point of the process. If Milwaukee had the circuitry designed to operate more like a slow blow fuse one might be able to get access to the full power potential of the drill.

The recharger is also designed to do a very slow charge so it takes 40 minutes on average to recharge the battery compared to 30 minutes with the Makita LXT and 15 minutes with the DeWalt DCD970 batteries. In theory this is supposed to result in longer battery life but on the job it means having a third battery charged and ready which is not something we need with the other drills. A nice touch with the Milwaukee charger is its plug which permits another plug to share the same outlet.

For really heavy duty use the DeWalt DCD970 is a much better drill for two key reasons. First is the more sane overload protection that has yet to cut power to the drill even when we have used it with a Blue Boar TCT Stucco & Wood bit to bore 6-1/4 inch holes through stucco walls and OSB sheathing.

The second reason we much prefer the DeWalt DCD970 is that it has a 3-speed gearbox. With a corded drill if the hole cutter is not very efficient (like a bi-metal hole saw or a self feed bit going into wood) it takes longer, sometimes a lot longer, to cut the hole but that is all that happens. With a cordless drill heat is more of a problem and when the power draw is too fast for the battery it loses a lot more of its available power and needs to be recharged after cutting fewer holes or driving fewer screws. The DeWalt DCD970 gives you 3 choices and it is more effective as it works within the "sweet spot" of its power range.

I can cut a hole faster at a slower speed with the DeWalt as it just keeps on turning than when using the M18 where the drill's power keeps going off and on repeatedly. The DeWalt is a smoother operating drill and I can cut 6" holes with a modern hole cutter like the Blue Boar TCT hole cutters and a 18 volt cordless drill, while my Milwaukee corded Hawg stud drill is maxed out with a 4 5/8 inch Milwaukee Selfeed bit. Matching the best hole cutter and the best torque range makes a big difference in how long and how many holes we can cut per battery.

We actually decided on a recent job to time how long it took to make 3 5/8 size holes in 1 1/8 inch thick Advantech subflooring and with a new Lenox bi-metal hole saw it took 45 seconds and it was smoking by the time the first hole had been made. With a Blue Boar TCT hole cutter it took 3 seconds with the DeWalt DCD970 and 5 seconds with the M18, and 4 seconds with a Makita BDF452HW drill which our light duty drill. After cutting the single hole with the Lenox hole saw it took more than half an hour to recharge the M18 battery. Now we know that getting a drill with a wide range of torque gearing and using a modern hole cutter makes all the difference in the world.

I have owned this drill now for several months. I wanted to wait awhile before reviewing it so I could use it in many different applications, and compare it to other drills I have owned.

First thing you notice when using this drill is it's power. I owned the V28 drill prior to this one and I must say the M18 has it beat hands down! I use uni-bits or step bits often and this drill chews through metal like no other drill I have owned. Another thing I noticed was how smooth it operates and the excellent build quality. This drill should hold up to worksite abuse very well.

The drill fits nicely in the hand and is not too heavy. I would say it's heavy enough to know you are using a quality tool and light enough to use all day without straining your wrist or arm.

Battery life is very good. I like the battery gauges that let you know how much battery life is left. This is something Milwaukee invented which was a great idea.

My only complaint is the small case the drill comes with. Could use more storage for bits.

I would recommend this drill to any tradesman or homeowner alike who wants a good quality drill that should last for years.

First, I'll state that the drill itself, along with the M18 batteries, are great. If it wasn't for Milwaukee's poor service, this would be a 5 star rating.

I am a partner in a small home building company. We had previously purchased the compact M18 drill/driver (2601-22) and liked it, so decided to invest in their more powerful "flagship" hammer drill/driver as well.

The compact drill/driver came with extremely useful belt hook and bit holder accessories, so I expected them to be on their self-proclaimed "flagship" drill as well. When I discovered these parts missing I contacted Milwaukee, thinking it had been left out by accident, and they said they stopped providing them as standard accessories late last year. So, with shipping and minimum order fees, I had to spend over $20 to get $3 in parts. Very frustrating considering the high cost of this drill.

Second, the trigger switch on my drill died after 3 weeks of light use. I sent it in for warranty repair, and the current estimate is that it is going to take 3-4 weeks to get my drill back because Milwaukee for some reason is not making enough repair parts for this drill. And they would not just send me a new one. Again, extremely frustrating considering the high cost of this drill.

I'm a commercial electrician and use this drill daily. Sometime for hours at a time. It has a ton of power. So much in fact it will darn near break your wrist if what you are drilling catches the bit and turns the drill when you least expect it. I'm constantly using large bore step bits to drill into steel j-boxes, door frames, etc. It's perfect. I have 3 other cordless drills and they stay at home. This is the only one I take to the job site with me every day. I'm so hard on this thing. I use it and use it hard. I have no clue what Consumer Reports could have possibly done to break it. I've used it so hard the drill body was too hot to rest your palm on and it didn't even smell. I've dropped it off a 10 foot step ladder onto concrete, picked it back up and used it the rest of the day. I've owned it 8 months and have put it through more than most people will in a lifetime and it's still going strong. I can't say enough about how extremely durable it is.

On the hammer setting it will drill 1/4" holes in block but that's about it, so don't expect much from the hammer setting if you have anything heavy-duty to drill. I use the Milwaukee 28v cordless SDS hammer drill for 99% of my hammer drilling anyway. (that drill is a superb hammer drill BTW)

As far as the other reviewers rating the drill down, READ THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION!. Under the caption "What's in the box", it says one hammer drill! That's it! READ next time you fools!

I purchased the "bare tool" because I have some v28 batteries, I like them because they stay charged on the shelf (within reason). This drill broke in Consumer Reports testing of hammer drills. Also, it is made in China. Performed very well in drilling concrete block for anchors. The side handle is the best yet of Bosch, DeWalt, Makita that I own. It is easily adjustable and stays put. UPDATE: 11/09 Recently had a conversation with a sales person at H.D. orange store. He said that they (H.D) are no longer pushing the 28v Millwaukee stuff due to the many failures in this line of tools. Basically because Millwaukee is using 28 volts on 18 volts guts.

"Great Drill" 2009-11-27

The drill is a great quality pruduct as you would expect from Milwaukee. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the Hackzall Saw. It too is well built and made to last, but the reciprocating travel of the blade going back and forth just is'nt enough. It has it's purposes here and there, but don't expect this Hackzall to do what a full size Sawzall can. I bought a few pruning blades to go with it and it works great on live trees, otherwise it just lays there and collects dust. I highly recommend the drill but not the saw.

I bought the hackzall many months ago, and was initially unimpressed with it, comparing it to my Sawzall and Sawzall Hatchet. BUT - after having it on hand for a number of months, I can now say that this is a GREAT tool, for those specific jobs where a real sawzall can't fit, or for any job where you would consider using a hand saw of any kind. The portability is a huge plus. The number of uses for this tool continue to expand, based on how handy it is to have around. The driver-drill is at least as good as the Bosch unit, and the locking collet design is a nice plus.

All in all, a tool package well worth the price. The only negative I can still find at this point is the cloth carrying bag. There are no hold-downs for the tools, so everything tends to get jumbled up and tools bang into each other in transit. At least some sort of pockets or velcro tie-downs would be an improvement.

I just recently purchased this tool combo set from an outside retailer other than Amazon, but wanted to leave feedback for other users to review. I've used Milwaukee 18v tools in the past and never had anything bad to say about them. They seem to have the best quality tools and longest lasting batteries in their field. This Hackzall is amazing. It can still cut through most anything that a regular size sawzall can and holds its own with battery longevity. It can fit both the short and regular size blades for all types of cutting applications. I enjoy the led light that's equipped on both tools. I received mine with the handy and styling Milwaukee bag as opposed to the plastic hard case. This is better if you like to carry extra tools and parts along with you. The drill is awesome and just seems to keep on going. I used it on all types of projects around my home and office before I had to change the battery. You may want to also purchase a 3/8 adjustable chuck key so you can use other drill bits that aren't fitted especially for hex applications like this drill is. Overall, so far so good. The price was right and it has a 5 year manufactures warranty. I would recommend this tool set for anyone who works in and around their home, or for even light duty commercial work. This will certainly outlast my no name drill which died on me after 3 months of use. You can't go wrong with Milwaukee brand tools in my opinion.

This tool combo is a valuable addition to my tool set. The saw and the screw gun both have a high quality feel. I bought the saw for the purpose of trimming the 40' Queen Palms in my yard. I have not done that yet, but I bought some pruning blades, and some lower-to-the ground performance indicates that the tool will perform the job nicely when I finally get up there and do it. The screw gun is an addition to the arsenal of screw guns I already have. It does not have the high speed that I'm used to from sinch collet type screw guns, but its lower gearing drives screws with authority. These are the first lithium battery tools I've owned, and so far the seem to perform just fine. From the photo, I expected a hard plastic case, but the set came with a canvas case which I'm using as a nice little gym bag. 5 stars for the set and each component!

I have been using two of these drills for a few years now and they are awesome . I don't know what these people are looking for out of a 12 volt cordless drill but they must be smoking something if they're not happy with this . This tool takes a beating and comes back for more . I bought this over two years ago & wanted to wait to review it. I have beaten this thing up mercilessly, including exposing it to salt water - never a total dunk, but lots of spray and splashes. No problem. I have also dropped it on concrete, in the sand, used it as a mallet, and done all kinds of other bad things to it.

My only complaints are (1)the low capacity batteries that come with the drill. They provide plenty of power - just not long enough. The replacement 2.4a.h. ones do a lot more work between charging.

(2)The belt hook is a joke, but I never use it anyway.

(3)The carrying case for this thing is a monster - big enough for three drills.

Good torque and the one-hand tightening chuck is very convenient. My outer bearings are getting a bit loose now, but given the amount of sand, mud, and plaster dust this thing has eaten in two years, I consider that OK.

Dont send a boy to do a mans job..Dissapointed in Milwakee's product for the first time. problems with chuck bearings. can not screw or drill much load. maybe a 12V drill should be called a screw gun not a drill

If you need a good all around cordless, this drill is highly recommended. Milwaukee has done a great job incorporating "Heavy Duty" toughness without the weight of an 18 volt bruiser! This drill is not only light but compact, nearly the size of my older Panasonic. The plastic housing is the best I have seen among cordless drills. Looks like it's built to last! The rubberized trigger and soft grip handle just adds to the balanced comfort. This drill also included a cool Clip-Lok system eliminating the need for a holster or one of those awkward lug hooks.

The power is more than adequate for most jobs. I was able to drill quite a few holes with my hole-saw during door installations. The drill does pack a pretty hefty kick with all the torque generated at 1400rpm. Luckily, there is a two speed feature to tame this beast! For me, a good 12 volt drill is perfect for most woodworking projects, the weight and extra bulk of anything greater is just not worth the fatique. Maybe I just don't have the ego for a hefty 18 or 24 volter! To me, the whole point of using cordless tools is to get away from the excess weight!

The only complaint I have on this drill is the trigger. Although, I love the rubberized feel, my finger got pinched quite a few times when I pulled the trigger. The fleshy part of my trigger finger got caught between the tacky rubber switch and the housing...Ouch! Then again, it may just be me and not the tool. All in all, this is another excellent product from Milwaukee! And a big mahalo to Larry at the Amazon/Tool-Crib for assisting with my purchase. No where on the islands was this beauty available!

Easy to use and lots of power.

I reach for the V28 all the time. Sometimes for a big job, I need a corded circular saw, but most of the time, this one does the job with ease.

tired of dragging the cord around? i would recomend this tool for everything except full 2" rough cut lumber. has good power on dry finished lumber but struggles with a full 2" deep cut.it's light weight and pretty tough. i dropped a wet 2"x12"x6' board on it last night and expected that to be the end, but not a scatch. the blade adjustment is on the right side of the tool making the adjustment a bit different if you're used to a worm drive skill. but for a quick job or cut it beats dragging out a cord. battery life is pretty good to. of course you always want 2.

By far the best battery operated saw I've ever used and owned. Lots of power, cuts through 2x's like butter even with the 40 tooth blade. Buying this "tool only" saw is nice if you already have the charger and batteries. You save alot of money from buying a kit with batteries and charger if you don't need them.

yes. this doesn't come with a battery. but it is ideal for people with many batteries and chargers already (i have 2 chargers and four batteries). I do not need this tool as i already have one with the kit, but the impact driver (or right angle drill or bandsaw or hammer drill) would be nice to spend half the price to get the tool when i don't need another charger and two more batteries
